Compassion is the greatest expression of love there is in life. To choose a life that is completely focused on helping, serving and loving others is a definite calling. I do not have that type of calling. I am too selfish.

This is a photo I captured of Joel DeBortoli one week ago today right before we left Dhanda Gaun, Nepal. Although I have only worked with Joel two times, I can honestly say I have learned a great deal by merely observing Joel and how he loves those around him through service. His desire and calling to serve others has truly inspired me. Although Joel will most likely be uncomfortable with me writing about him and would prefer I “put the focus on Jesus,” I do believe honoring Joel and his wife Tammy and the work they do in Nepal is honoring Jesus.

I see it very much like when one goes to an art gallery and admires a painting or piece of art. The artist or creator would never be offended hearing someone talk about how that particular piece of art moves and touches them. Honoring the creation also gives honor to the creator.

Several years ago Joel, left a NBA career to serve others. Both he, Tammy and their family have dedicated their entire lives to serving and helping others. Although I have only seen a small portion of all that they do and how they help, it is obvious to me that without a “real calling” they could not do all that they do for the people of Nepal. It is not their strength, but it is His strength, through them that gives so much to so many. However, it is equally true that it was their “yes” that allows the Creator to use them as such powerful tools for His creations. Thank you for saying “yes” Joel and Tammy and for teaching me so much.
